Scope and Contents

This collection consists of records that pertain to the research, planning and development, objects, and publicity of the exhbition. Many of the materials include correspondance via mail and email, drafts and copies of promotional material, and images of objects from the exhibtion. See each series for a more detailed description of the contents.

Series I: Objects - Materials related to photography, installation, and research on loan objects. Includes communications on sourcing objects, preliminary object descriptions and references.

Series II : Exhibition Planning - Materials related to the planning of the exhibition. Includes fundraising materials, preliminary design plans, lists of guests, expense reports, exhibition proposals, public programs materials, and meeting notes.

Series III: Interpretation - This series contains interpretative material created for the exhibition. Includes gallery guidebooks, exhibition programs, wall text and labels.

Series IV: Press and Publicity - Press, publicity, and promotional materials. Includes press releases, critiques, reviews, exhibition photography, invitations, and press releases. With the addition of materials mentioning the documentary produced after the exhibition with a focus on Marimekko.

Series V: Research - Research on the subjects explored in the exhibition.

Exhibition History

Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture (November 21, 2003 – February 15, 2004) was curated by Marianne Aav.

The exhibition examined the Marimekko's history through its periods of international success in the 1960s and mid-1970s, into the early 2000s. Its primary lender to was The Finnish Museum of Art and Design in Helsinki, with additional objects loaned from private and public collections.

Records of the 2003 Bard Graduate Center exhibition Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture, curated by Marianne Av. The files document the development, coordination, research, loan objects, and interpretive content of the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue.

Arrangement

The collection has been arranged into eight series. Within each series, original order of files has been maintained, except instances where they were consolidated and interfiled from multiple locations.
