Biographical / Historical

Clive Wainwright was a leading historian of decorative arts and, along with his wife Jane Mylander Wainwright, a major figure in furniture studies. He worked and researched for more than 30 years at the Victoria and Albert Museum, developing an authority and producing scholarship on many aspects of design and the decorative arts.

Beginning in the 1970s, Wainwright published widely on subjects including William Beckford’s collection, the furniture of A.W.N. Pugin, and the furnishings of Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott’s home. His doctoral thesis was published as The Romantic Interior: The British Collector at Home 1750-1850. A preeminent Pugin scholar, he published Pugin: A Gothic Passion (with Paul Atterbury), accompanying a V&A exhibition, and contributed to the catalogue of the Bard Graduate Center exhibition A.W.N. Pugin: Master of Gothic Revival.

A longtime supporter of Bard Graduate Center, Wainwright served as supervisor of the doctoral studies of its Founder/Director Dr. Susan Weber, later contributing the preface to her exhibition catalogue on E.W. Godwin. Among Wainwright’s educator roles was leading spirited tours for BGC students abroad at The Palace of Westminster.
